POSITION: Laboratory Technologist – Level 1

DEPARTMENT: Vanderburgh County Health Department – Lab

SUPERVISOR: Laboratory Supervisor

The Laboratory Technologist performs a wide range of laboratory procedures, including but not limited to:

Clinical Testing & Analysis

  • STAT Gram stains
  • Syphilis screening and titers as indicated
  • HIV testing
  • Wet preparations
  • Point of Care testing (HCG, Cholesterol, Glucose, Lipid Panels, HgbA1c)
  • Bacterial analysis of drinking water, recreational water, and ice

Phlebotomy

  • Perform adult and pediatric capillary and venous blood draws in accordance with VCHD Phlebotomy Procedures.

Specimen & Reference Management

  • Prepare and send reference samples to IDOH Laboratories
  • Receive reference lab reports and ensure timely distribution to appropriate staff for accurate patient charting
  • Follow established procedures for specimen handling, processing, analysis, reporting, and record maintenance
  • Document and report critical laboratory results in accordance with VCHD Critical Result Reporting Policy

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Test and report proficiency samples using the same standards as patient testing
  • Adhere to laboratory Quality Control policies
  • Perform and document quality control testing, instrument calibration, and maintenance
  • Identify and report equipment or testing issues to the Laboratory Director
  • Take corrective action when quality control or test results fall outside acceptable limits
  • May be asked to perform in Quality Assurance team activities

Inventory & Operational Support

  • Monitor laboratory supply and equipment inventory
  • Verify received supplies for accuracy, quantity, and expiration dates
  • Report discrepancies and submitting documentation to the Laboratory Director
  • Organize workload effectively and produce accurate results within established timeframes

Communication & Collaboration

  • Maintain effective communication with laboratory leadership, departmental staff, external partners, governmental agencies, and the general public
  • Foster professional, courteous, and cooperative working relationships
  • Must work well in team settings
  • Must be willing to engage and participate in community outreach events as needed

Responsibilities

  • The incumbent applies established laboratory policies and procedures to varied testing situations, exercising sound judgment when necessary to ensure effective laboratory operations.
  • Unusual situations or deviations from standard procedures are discussed with the Laboratory Director. Work is periodically reviewed for compliance with departmental policies, CLIA regulations, IDOH microbiological water certification regulations, ethical standards, and best laboratory practices.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

  • Work is performed in a clinical laboratory setting
  • Moderate physical activity required
  • Exposure to potentially infectious materials and communicable diseases
  • Strict adherence to Universal Precautions and safety protocols required

Required:

  • High School Diploma
  • Associate’s degree in medical laboratory science from a NAACLS-accredited program
  • ASCP Board Certification
  • Proficiency in adult and pediatric phlebotomy

Preferred

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience as a Medical Laboratory Technologist
  • Proficient in adult and pediatric phlebotomy

    • 6-month rate: $59,019
