Birth and Death Records and Certificates

The Vital Records Section of the Vanderburgh County Health Department started keeping records in February 1882.  There are no records in Indiana before that time.  The Indiana State Department of Health in Indianapolis started keeping records in October 1907.

Vanderburgh County birth and death records can be obtained from our office, on a walk in basis, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (except legal Holidays) 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Wednesday 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Indiana requires an applicant requesting a birth certificate, whether by mail or in person, to show identification and proof of relationship. 

Certificate ID Requirements

Appointments are necessary for requests of records other than birth and death certificates, such as paternity affidavits, home birth registrations, and court orders. To make an appointment call: (812) 435-2400.
