Women Infants, Children

WIC is a special supplemental food program for Women, Infants, and Children to teach them the relationship between proper nutrition and health, to help individuals develop better dietary habits, and to prevent nutrition-related problems. WIC is available to all eligible participants without regard to race, color, natural origin, age, sex, or handicap.

WIC offers families:

  • Breastfeeding education and support
  • eWIC card to buy healthy foods
  • Health and social service referrals
  • Immunization screening and referrals
  • Tips for eating well to improve health

Persons eligible for WIC include:

  • Pregnant individuals 
  • Breastfeeding parents (up to one year after delivery)
  • Postpartum parents (up to six months after delivery)
  • Infants (babies under the age of one)
  • Children under five years of age

ALL persons who receive Medicaid/Hoosier Healthwise, SNAP, and TANF are income-eligible for WIC.

To participate in the WIC program a person must:

  • Live within the State of preferred participation
  • Meet income guidelines
  • Have a nutrition or medical risk

INCOME means total income before deductions.

HOUSEHOLD means a group of related or non-related individuals who are not residents of an institution but who are living as ONE ECONOMIC UNIT.

For a SELF-EMPLOYED PERSON such as a farmer or a small business owner, the income is deemed to be gross income less business expenses.  This figure, as stated in the most recent tax filing, may be used.
